Review of Education / Health Operational Protocols on Therapy & Equipment Services The Ministries of Health and Education are jointly conducting a review
of the following two protocols: These protocols have been in operation for over eight years without formal review. Over time there has been growing concern that the protocols may be acting as barriers to effective services. There is also concern that there is a gap for speech language therapy. The aim is to review the effectiveness of the current protocols and make recommendations for revising them, within existing policy and resourcing. This work has been contracted out to Acqumen Solutions Ltd, and will be led by Carmel Daly. The review will be completed by 28 Feb 2009 with recommendations for revising the protocols. Two Technical Advisory Groups have been established – one for Equipment and one for Therapies. These will provide service provision expertise and knowledge to the project. Members are listed in the attached terms of reference. Information on current strengths and areas for development will be gathered through fieldwork in four sample areas: • Waitemata DHB –North and West GSE areas The fieldwork will include interviewing representatives from DHB and GSE staff, families and schools Planning for the fieldwork is now underway and once this is completed, areas where further information is required will be identified. We will work through the professional networks to gather further feedback. You can expect to hear more about the project by the end of November.
