Ahiahi pai me gna powhiri

Good afternoon and greetings

Continue celebrating SLT Awareness week and join the Adult Acquired AAC SIG discussions on Zoom tomorrow, Thursday 10 September 2020
Time: 4-5.30pm

Tomorrow is an opportunity to come together, connect and share our experiences working with adults requiring AAC during the last few months.
In particular korero on our experiences with adults with cultural and linguistic diversity and our varied adventures using Telehealth in the delivery of AAC.

We will take a moment to review PD some of you may have attended, or share what we know is coming up.
As always good news stories are encouraged!

The concept of Ako

"The concept of ako describes a teaching and learning relationship, where the educator is also learning from the student and where educators’ practices are informed by the latest research and are both deliberate and reflective. Ako is grounded in the principle of reciprocity and also recognises that the learner and whānau cannot be separated." Ka Hikitia, 2008, p.20

This concept of ako can be seen as an integral part of our reflective practice. It is being used more and more to describe the adult learning relationship and the understanding that we are both the teacher and the learner.

So what have we learnt from our clients during this time? What have they learnt? and How.

Here are a few questions to get us thinking, reflecting and ready for sharing tomorrow

  1. How has your practice been in 2020? What changes have you noticed or implemented? How do you feel these have affected your work?
  2. How have your clients responded to potential changes in practice models/therapy interventions?
  3. What have you learnt during this time that you will take with you as an ongoing part of your practice?
  4. What are your 3 top tips for people implementing AAC therapy within the current climate (thinking about Telehealth as well as capacity)?
